KUCHING: Kampung Semerah Padi fire victims have received aid from several quarters, including the Sarawak government.

Minister of Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah presented aid to homeowner Shamsu Kawie yesterday.

He and his eight family members were made homeless by a fire on June 24.

Fatimah told the press that food aid of RM50 per person was presented to the family on the night of the incident and the ceremony yesterday was to hand over the remaining financial assistance.

“There’s no need for the victims to apply for the assistance as government agency personnel will go to the ground when there is such a reported incident,” said Fatimah, adding the family had received aid totalling RM10,150.

This included RM100 cash for each family member, as well as financial aid to purchase clothes, school uniforms, schooling equipment, bedding, kitchen equipment, and building materials.

“I would like to thank the state government for providing various assistance to my family,” said Shamsu.

Among those present at the ceremony was Assistant Minister of Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.

As of July 1 this year, RM231,377.80 in disaster assistance had been given out to victims of fire, landslides, thunderstorms, floods, and drought throughout the state.
