SMC: Having water tanks ready at food outlets can address problems caused by supply disruption

-

SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) in considering installing water tanks at food outlets in areas under its jurisdiction, as a way to address possible disruptions to their business should in the event of a water supply interruption.

SMC chairman Clarence Ting said he would raise the matter during the next full council meeting.

The issue came about following a water supply interruption that occurred on Wednesday, said to be caused by the main pipe leakage at Jalan Salim here.

“I will bring up in (the next) council meeting to see if we could mandate food outlets to install water tanks, so that any water stoppage would not disrupt their business,” Ting said in his Facebook post yesterday.

He observed that the water supply problem was rectified around noon on Thursday, following repair works on the main pipe at Jalan Salim.

“The water supply was restored to town centre around 1.30pm, but areas that were the furthest away from the treatment plant, namely Rantau Panjang, only had their water supply reconnected by 11pm last night (Thursday),” he noted.

Ting said he had spoken to Sibu Water Board ( SWB) yesterday, and the board highly recommended that consumers would store water in tanks as a contingency plan should such disruption occur again in the future.

On Thursday, a SWB source told The Borneo Post that almost 85 per cent of some 60,000 households here experienced no water supply, due to the leakage on the 750mm mid-steel main pipe.

Meanwhile, Ting inspected the progress of works on the Ulu Sungai Merah traffic-light junction project yesterday, where he observed that the contractor was doing the most critical job – the levelling works on Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah.

“(The project) still needs three months to complete,” he pointed out.
