Zakat of RM8.5 million benefits 55,168 folk affected by MCO
SIBU: Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS) has spent some RM8.5 million in ‘ zakat’ (tithe) to help 55,168 individuals affected by the prolonged Movement Control Order (MCO) period.
In this respect, TBS general manager Datuk Abang Mohd Shibli Abang Mohd Nailie says the bulk of the special Covid19 assistance has been credited directly into the accounts of the recipients.
“We are among the fastest organisations to have done this, having channelled the payments to over 40,000 recipients via direct deposit into their accounts. As for the rest of the recipients, the aid comes in the form of food packages,” he said in his speech prior to presenting the aid to the ‘asnaf’ (those entitled to receiving tithe in syariah such as the destitute folk, Muslim converts, orphans and poor single mothers) at Sarawak Islamic Complex Sibu yesterday.
Adding on, Abang Mohd Shibli said the food aid was also given to those being held at the quarantine centres and the Covid-19-positive patients in hospitals – regardless of religion and race.
“In addition, we have also provided personal protective equipment (PPE) to four hospitals across Sarawak during the MCO period,” he added.

Shibli, TBS has been able to provide such assistance to the needy community, thanks to the
Muslims who never fail to fulfil their obligation of paying their tithes to the TBS.
Later, ‘zakat’ totalling RM30,360 was distributed to 21 recipients under TBS’ three key programmes – the ‘Strengthening of Knowledge’, ‘Strengthening of Welfare of the Ummah (Community)’, and the ‘ Development of Islamic Institutions’.
Abang Mohd Shibli said as at May 31 this year, these three major programmes had benefitted 17,070 applicants from all over Sarawak, with total allocation of RM16.3 million.
