Youth cycling tour advocates ‘unity amidst diversity’

- Peter Boon

SIBU: A cycling tour around town yesterday, which involved some 50 youths from diverse backgrounds, meant to advocate and foster the spirit of ‘unity amidst diversity’ among the younger population here.

Group spokesman Abdul Taib Rosli said the idea behind this simple programme derived from previous discussions involving a number of local youths.

“What’s interesting was the cycling activity seemed to be able to strengthen the unity among Sibu youths, despite their different backgrounds,” he said, adding that every participant adhered strictly to the standard operating procedures (SOP) slated for such activity, especially the social distancing practice.

The cycling route started from and ended at Surau Darul Islam Kampung Bandong, covering about 20km.

“The participants cycled across Igan Bridge, and rode past the roundabout heading towards Tutus, Tanjung Malim ferry point, Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase II, Kampung Datu Lama and Kampung Hilir.

“Although we cycled as a group, we fully complied with the SOP set under the Recovery Movement Control Order ( RMCO) – every rider was distanced between 1m and 3m apart from one another.

“All participants had been briefed on the SOP and other safety procedures before the start of the ride,” said Abdul Taib.

According to him, the group strives to organise and run this activity more frequently.

“Perhaps, we could do it once a month – if not weekly.” Councillor Mohd Izkandar Abdullah, who is also Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu ( PBB) Youth chief for Nangka constituency, was among the participating cyclists.
