KUCHING: The inaugural Sarawak Music Fashion Galore 2020 will highlight Sarawak Songket for the purpose of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) nominations.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the event on Nov 28 at Pullman Kuching will feature famous models, fashion designers, and music.

It is organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in collaboration with the Malaysian Association of Arts and Culture Activists (Macpa).

During a press conference yesterday, Abdul Karim explained that the event chose Sarawak Songket as a work of art with the theme ‘Enchanting Evening with Sarawak Songket’ to elevate the traditional craft to a higher level.

“Sarawak Songket is incorporated under the Malaysia Songket nomination to Unesco’s representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity 2021.

“By highlighting songket with Sarawakian motifs such as Belatak motif, Songket Bertabur, Songket Biasa Bunga Turus, Songket Limar, and other motifs in events like this, Sarawak Songket will be seen to be on par with Malaysia Songket, especially with the involvement of famous local fashion designers like Datuk Tom Abang Saufi, Datin Anna Sue, and Ben Nadzari,” he said.

Abdul Karim said the uniqueness of the event is having 10 models showcasing the 10 designs of famous designers, accompanied by kugiran or live band comprising singers and musicians.

“There will also be special appearances by Dewi Liana and also Baby Shima, who is a model and famous singer in Sarawak,” he said.
