S’wak records two deaths, 250 new positive cases

KUCHING: Sarawak yesterday recorded two deaths of Covid-19infected individual­s, making the total number of fatalities in the state to 80.

There were also 250 new positive cases reported yesterday, said the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a statement.

“The 79th death involved a 59year-old Sarawakian man who received emergency treatment at Betong Hospital. The case was referred directly to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) in Kuching for further treatment as his health condition turned critical – the Antigen Rapid Test Kit for the case came out positive on the same day.

“The case had exhibited symptoms of fever, cough and body fatigue over the past few days before receiving treatment. The rT-PCR screening test was positive for Covid-19 on Feb 24 and he was confirmed to have died on the same day. The case had comorbidit­y of diabetes, high blood pressure, gout and chronic kidney disease,” it said.

The 80th death involved a 54year-old Sarawakian man who was admitted to Bintulu Hospital after the rT-PCR test came out positive on Feb 12, detected through close contact tracing of a positive case. The health condition of the case deteriorat­ed and he was pronounced dead on Feb 26. The case had comorbidit­y of high blood pressure and diabetes.

Meanwhile, the new cases yesterday were detected in Sibu District with 104 cases, Kuching (43 cases), Kapit (39 cases), Meradong (13 cases), Bintulu (10 cases), Betong (nine cases), Miri (eight cases), Samarahan (four cases), Sebauh (three cases), Subis (three cases), Julau (two cases), Dalat (two cases), Beluru (two cases), Selangau (two cases), Bau (two cases), and one case each in Asajaya, Serian, Saratok, and Song. This brought the total number of positive cases in Sarawak to 8,869 cases.

Of Sibu District’s 104 cases, 75 were from individual­s screened through active case detection (ACD) of contacts with Covid19 positive cases; 16 from those screened at healthcare centre in the district; and 13 from the screening of symptomati­c individual­s.

In Kuching District, 36 cases were from the Emperoh Jambu Cluster, five were cases screened at healthcare centre in the district, one from ACD, and one imported case involving a Sarawakian screened after returning from high-risk infection areas in the country (Kuala Lumpur).

In Kapit District, 27 cases were from the Gelong Cluster, 11 were the results of ACD, and one from the Pasai Cluster.

In Meradong District, seven were results of the ACD, five from the Sungai Bakong Cluster, and one from the screening of a symptomati­c individual.

In Bintulu District, six cases were individual­s screened via ACD, three were individual­s screened at healthcare centre in the district, and one from the screening of a symptomati­c individual.

In Betong District, all nine cases were from the Jalan Muhibbah Cluster.

In Miri District, seven cases were from the screening at a healthcare centre in the district, and one from the screening of a symptomati­c individual.

In Samarahan District, three cases were from the Jalan Green Cluster, and one was an imported case involving a Sarawakian screened after returning from high-risk infection areas in the country (Johor).

The cases in Subis and Sebauh districts were the results of ACD.

Both cases in Beluru District were from the screening of individual­s present at a healthcare centre in the district.

The cases in Selangau and Bau districts were from ACD.

In Dalat District, one case was the result of one ACD, while another was from the screening of a symptomati­c individual.

In Julau District, both cases were from the screening of symptomati­c individual­s. The case in Serian District was from the Emperoh Jambu Cluster.

In Saratok District, the case was an individual screened via the ACD.

In Asajaya District, the case was from the screening of a symptomati­c individual, while in Song District, the single case was from the Pasai Cluster.

Meanwhile, SDMC said there were 131 cases of recoveries and discharges from hospitals yesterday – 93 in Sibu Hospital, 16 in SGH, nine in Kapit Hospital, seven in Bintulu Hospital, and six in Miri Hospital.

“As of today (yesterday), 6,621 cases have recovered and discharged. A total of 2,385 cases are still being treated in hospitals – 1,097 cases in Sibu Hospital, 379 cases in SGH, 272 in Bintulu Hospital, 208 in Miri Hospital, 207 cases in Kapit Hospital, 197 in Sarikei Hospital, and 25 in Sri Aman Hospital,” said SDMC.

There were 373 new personunde­r-investigat­ion (PUI) cases reported yesterday, with 40 still awaiting laboratory results. This brought the cumulative number of PUIs in Sarawak to 21,650 to date.

Asforperso­n-under-surveillan­ce (PUS) cases, there were 585 individual­s who had checked into the designated quarantine centres yesterday for their compulsory 14-day quarantine. This brought the total of current PUS to 6,084 individual­s, placed at 86 hotels and non-hotel quarantine centres across Sarawak.

To date, those who have completed their quarantine period numbered at 68,139.
