CM to seek audience with Agong on dissolution of DUN
KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg will seek an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong with regards to the dissolution of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN).
The state ruling coalition Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) secretary-general Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the dissolution of the Sarawak DUN will be on a date the King, after consultation with the Yang Dipertua Negeri, thinks appropriate.
“The Most Honourable Chief Minister has had an audience with the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak and informed that under the Sarawak Constitution the tenure of our DUN would end on June 6, which is five years from the date of its first meeting on June 6, 2016 after the Sarawak election of 2016.
“However, this provision of the State Constitution has no effect by virtue of the Emergency Ordinance 2021,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Nanta, who is also Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, said the dissolution of the DUN therefore will be on a date the King, after consultation with the Governor, thinks appropriate.
“We have full confidence and trust in their wisdom to decide thereon. During the Covid-19 pandemic health Emergency, the people’s life is paramount,” he said.
Nanta, who is also Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) secretary-general, said it is widely known that the current DUN term would expire on June 6.
Under normal circumstances, he said the DUN would have been dissolved for the return of the people’s mandate to democratically elect their government in an election.
“But we are under a health pandemic Covid-19 Emergency until Aug 1, 2021,” he added.
