KUCHING: Rohani Wan Abdullah, a 51-year-old widow, has gotten an opportunity to earn income to support her family under Hope Place Kuching new Bundle Project.

According to its statement, Rohani is the first participant of the project to sell pre-loved clothing in her neighbourhood at very low prices.

Rohani who lives at Kpg Sg Tapang managed to make a reasonable profit since she started in March.

The widow has to care for her two adult children and three grandchildren as her daughter who is separated suffers from depression while her son is mentally disabled and needs constant care. Her eldest grandson is also a PwD (learning disability).

Hope Place started helping Rohani and her family with basic food aid since February last year.

Although she receives financial aid of RM300 per month from Baitumal and her OKU son receives RM300 monthly from the state Welfare Department, money is very tight with rent, school supplies, bills and others to pay.

“I am very excited and happy doing this. I always wanted to have a better life for my family and now my prayers have been answered,” said an emotional Rohani.

According to Hope Place, Rohani was chosen as she has experience selling ‘kuih’ and understands the fundamentals of sales.

Her sheer determination in making a success out of this endeavour is motivating.

Rohani even goes as far as to ask for her cousin’s help with transportation and goes around on a small motorbike to sell pre-loved clothes at villages in Semariang, Samarahan, Petrajaya and even the army camp in Mile 8.

“Who would have thought that a middle-aged grandmother would strive hard and fight for a better life, despite facing so many challenges. Rohani shared shyly that her dream is to own a shop one day. It goes to show that life is all about second chances and having a positive outlook to be empowered,” added the statement.

The non-governmental organisation opened its second Budget Outlet selling donated pre-loved items this week.

Hope Place opens 8am to 5pm on weekdays and 8am to noon on Saturdays. All donations are welcomed and receipts will be given upon request.

Individuals may donate directly to Hope Place’s Maybank account 511289001160 or visit its Facebook page for Sarawak Pay QR code.
