Socso continues to play roles proactivel­y, says state director

SARIKEI: Social Security Organisati­on (Socso) will continue to play its roles proactivel­y in looking after the social security of workers in the country, says its state director Philip Sangkan.

Initially, Socso was set up to administer and implement social security scheme as provided under the Employees Social Security Act 1969, and to keep up with different needs due to changes in the work environmen­t. It has enforced new Act and introduced new schemes, he said in his speech in conjunctio­n with the divisional­level Socso Day at the Innovation Centre here yesterday.

“To keep abreast with changing need over the years, Socso has since July 2017 enforced the Self Employment Social Security Act 2017 for the benefit of self-employed individual­s including taxi, e-haling and bus drivers and Employee Insurance System Act 2017 in January 2018 to provide temporary financial assistance to retrenched workers,” he said. His speech was read by Socso branch manager here Fenny Lim.

He added that since 2020, Socso had worked even more actively and proactivel­y to help alleviate the hardship of contributo­rs impacted by the movement control order (MCO) due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Socso was tasked to implement various programmes, such as Penjana, Pemerkasa, Permai and Pemulih, initiated by the government to assist the adversely impacted employees and employers, he said.

To ensure the wellbeing of their clients were taken care of, they had to beat all odds including coping with the tight SOPs in order to provide satisfacto­ry service.

He assured that Socso would make it a point to get all claims and accident and retrenchme­nt benefits are processed speedily.

For instance, 315 claims were processed in the first nine months of this year, here alone, he said.

On the celebratio­n, Philip said it provided an opportunit­y for Socso staff to interact with the contributo­rs and understand their problems.

“Socso Day is celebrated on Oct 1 each year since its establishm­ent in 1971. This year is its golden jubilee.”

Repok assemblyma­n Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii who officiated at the ceremony commended Socso staff for their full commitment in looking after the welfare of employees badly hit by the MCO to contain the spread of Covid-19.
