MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC)’s new building, Miri City Hall, has received the ‘Green House Index’ (GHI) certification by the Green Building Index (GBI) Accreditation Panel.

Mayor Adam Yii, who announced this during the full council meeting here yesterday, said its new building scored a GBI rating of 63 points out of the possible maximum threshold of 100.

Located in Miri Marina Bay, the Miri City Hall would replace the current building at Jalan Raja here.

According to Yii, the GHI certification process was divided into two parts – the design assessment comprising paperwork evaluation and issuance of provisional certificate; and the complete verification assessment covering detailed presentation of the actual results and subsequently, the actual certification that would be valid for three years.

“The assessment is embarked on six principal criteria – energy efficiency; indoor environmental quality; sustainable site selection, planning and management; materials and resources; water efficiency; and innovation to promote sustainability in the built environment.

“The green features of Miri City Hall have met the GBI criteria such as low e-coated glass and shading louvers to reduce solar heat gain; the atrium to promote stack effect for better ventilation at the podium, less energy consumption and smarter energy management; green vehicle carpark system, as well as watersaving system.

“Green features such as building energy intensity, smart energy consumption, and also recycling activities to emphasise the green concepts can be promoted via the digital display units at the lift lobby, to promote staff awareness. It is important to note that the sustainability of Miri City Hall is the responsibility of everyone,” said the mayor during the meeting – the final one to be conducted at the present MCC Chamber before relocation to the new building.

Yii remarked further: “This meeting room has witnessed the transformation of Miri District Council into Miri Municipal Council, and later, into Miri City Council. It has also witnessed the change of leadership – from (late) Yang Siew Siang (Miri District Council), (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri) Dr George Chan, Tan Sri Peter Chin, (late) Dr Yie Siew Kee, Dato Wee Han Wen, Datuk Lawrence Lai, and myself.

“It is the powerhouse of the local authority in formulating regulations, by-laws and other legislation as well as implementing council policies and many decisions towards the betterment of Miri and its communities.

“The fond memories, the spirit of togetherness in one team, and the principle of serving the people, have kept us together despite each one of us coming from different backgrounds and ethnic groups,” said Yii.

Regarding the new building, the mayor said this Nov 15 had been proposed as the grand opening day for Miri City Hall, where Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to officiate at the event.
