Dr Abdul Rahman: Two projects to solve Lawas water woes implemented
TWO projects have been implemented by the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunications to solve water woes in Lawas, said Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication II (Utility) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.
He said the existing Trusan Regional Water Treatment Plant (WTP) which has capacity of 20 million litres a day (MLD) is being upgraded to 40 MLD with project completion expected this year end.
The Rehabilitation Works and Recommissioning of 5 MLD Gelugus (WTP) has also been completed.
“The existing Trusan Regional Water Treatment Plant (WTP), with capacity of 20 million litres a day (MLD) has been in operation since 2013 to supply water to Lawas district. The water shortage is due to inability to meet present demand.
“To overcome the shortage of water supply, two projects have been implemented under Project Rakyat to increase production capacity of treated water supply in Lawas,” he said when answering Ba’Kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian during the question-and-answer session at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting yesterday.
As a long term solution, he said another two projects – the new Lawas Water Treatment Plant (20MLD) and New Trusan Water Treatment Plant (50MLD) have been proposed under the 12th Malaysia Plan.
Meanwhile, in response to Bukit Begunan assemblyman Datuk Mong Dagang, Dr Abdul Rahman said Sarawak Alternative Water Supply (Sawas) project in Banting, Lingga to benefit 268 households is still under tender evaluation process for implementation this year.
