KUCHING: A horrified grandmother at Kampung Nyabut in Telaga Air near here witnessed her 7-year-old grandson attacked and dragged into a river by a crocodile early yesterday.

The child, Mohd Adammi Moktar, was playing by the riverbank in front of their house together with his two older sisters aged 11 and 12.

Their 48-year-old grandmother Bibah Harup, who said the crocodile which could have measured to around six metres long, was nearby.

“I heard my two granddaughters shouting ‘Boyak! Boyak!’ (Crocodile! Crocodile!) and quickly turned around to see the crocodile clamping its jaws down on my grandson’s head,

“At that moment, I could see his arms and legs were flailing from the reptile’s jaw,” Bibah said when met at her house.

She said she rushed to the riverbank to free her grandson from the laws of the reptile but he was dragged into the river and disappeared within seconds.

According to Bibah, she sometimes saw the same crocodile on the bank of the river but it had always kept its distance from the house.

“We never expected it to come so near to our house today,” she said, describing the crocodile as having a white belly and a dark, almost black, coloured back.

She hoped the body of her grandson could be recovered by the search and rescue team as soon as possible.

According to Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), a report of the crocodile attack was received at 8.30am and a team of rescuers from the Petra Jaya fire station was rushed to the scene.

They were later joined by personnel from Civil Defence Force, People’s Volunteer Corp and the police are still searching for the body.
