Sailfish swims to fore in State Age Group Championships
KUCHING: Miri’s Sailfish Swimming Club lived up to expectations at the recent Sarawak Age Group Swimming Championships hosted by Miri Amateur Swimming Association (MASA) at Miri Public Swimming Pool.
The club’s 22-member team led by chief coach Raymond Ting contributed 16 gold, 15 silver and five bronze medals to MASA’shaul of 25 gold, 35 silver and 38 bronze medals.
MASA were placed third in the five-team meet with 1,263.5 points after Kota Samarahan Amateur Swimming Association (1, 777.5) and Kuching Amateur Swimming Association (1,361).
Sailfish’s star performer was Kayleigh Ang who bagged eight individual golds and one team relay gold in the two-day state meet aimed at selecting swimmers to represent Sarawak in next month’s National Age Group (NAG) Swimming Championships.
Kayleigh, who competed in the Girls Group C, won the 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke, 200m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly and 200m butterfly.
She also dominated the 200m and 400m individual events.
Apart from that, Kayleigh also won six individual silvers, one bronze and a silver in the 4x100m relay. She was named the best girl swimmer in Girls Group C and earned a ticket to compete in the coming NAG.
The team’s other two individual gold medals were won by Hector Ho in Boys Group A 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke.
Sailfish swimmers also helped MASA to collect gold medals in the Boys Group B 4x100m freestyle relay, Boys C 4x100m freestyle relay, Boys E 4x100m freestyle relay, Boys E 4x100m individual medley relay and Girls C 4x100m freestyle relay.
Ting was delighted that his swimmers could compete with the best in the state.
“Congratulations to all swimmers, they have worked very hard during training and their hard work has paid off handsomely. I hope that they can even perform better in future competitions and I wish Kayleigh all the best at the national meet,” he said.
