Career head start in quantity surveying

-

MOST engineering and construction projects, whether it be a building, bridge or highway, involve quantity surveyors.

You can think of a quantity surveyor as someone who is responsible for project planning and costing, ensuring that a project meets its financial and delivery outcomes.

As a profession, quantity surveying is multi-disciplinary in that it combines elements of engineering, management, finance and law.

Reputed UK QS Programme The BSc Quantity Surveying (QS) programme offered at the University of Reading in the UK has a long and established trackrecord.

The University’s School of the Built Environment is ranked #3 in the UK for ‘Building’ in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021.

The same programme is also offered at the University’s international branch campus in Malaysia, located in EduCity Iskandar.

The programme in Malaysia follows the same curriculum and academic quality standards, and students are awarded exactly the same University of Reading degree upon graduation.

The BSc QS programme exposes students to both the theory and practice of quantity surveying.

During the first two years of the programme, students study core topics in: Building science and technology; Construction techniques and processes; Construction economics; Construction law and contracts; Building procurement, cost planning and project management; Building information modelling (BIM); and Sustainability.

In the final year, students undertake a major project that allows them to apply their knowledge and skills.

The Malaysia campus benefits from having its own dedicated Building Information Modelling (BIM) lounge which allows students to experience cuttingedge technology such as virtual reality (VR).

The BSc QS programme in Malaysia is globally accredited and recognised by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB),

the Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM) and the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (PAQS).

PAQS accreditation includes recognition from over 10 further professional bodies covering countries such as Australia, China, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, and New Zealand.

This makes the programme one of the most widelyaccredited in the world, which would particularly benefit those planning to work overseas now or in the future.

Industry-ready graduates

One of the distinguishing features of the BSc QS programme is the balance between technical, managerial and digital skills, which produces graduates with a wellrounded skillset. It should also be no surprise that graduate employability is a strong feature of the programme.

The university has many industry links and students are encouraged to undertake work placements to enhance their employability.

Enhancing their employability even further, students also receive a joint certificate in BIM from the University and CostEXactal, one of the industry-leading BIM players, on successful completion of the programme.

Dual-campus option

Students can start their studies at the Malaysia campus, and take advantage of the flexible mobility and transfer option which allows them to spend their 2nd and even 3rd year at the University’s UK campus in Reading.

The university’s main campus in the UK is set in 130 hectares of beautiful parkland and has won the Green Flag award nine times in a row, making it one of the UK’s best green spaces.

The campus has everything a student could need, including sports facilities, eateries, a supermarket and on-campus accommodation.

The university is a short bus ride away from Reading town centre which has ample shops, restaurants and amenities.

Reading town is also conveniently located, being only a 30-minute train ride from London.

Students can benefit from a truly global experience, but with the knowledge that the QS curriculum is the same regardless of which campus they study on.
