Work together in building green community, councillor calls on Sibu folks

-

SIBU: Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) Councillor Kevin Lau has called upon the people to work together in all efforts meant to preserve the environment and help build a green community.

This was highlighted by him prior to kicking off a cleaning campaign jointly conducted by the local village security and development committee (JKKK) and SJKC Keng Nang in Tanjung Ensurai recently.

“Such efforts would help reduce indiscriminate waste dumping and also advocate the people to be against environmental pollution,” he said.

The work party, initiated by Kapitan Hii Hiong Ping, involved all the teachers and pupils of SJKC Keng Nang, together with the local residents.

Lau, also SRDC Environment and Public Health Standing Committee chairman, said public health and the environment took centrestage in enhancing the cooperation between the people and the government.

He reminded everyone about climate change having affected the global community, adding that last year, Malaysia recorded a record-high temperature of 38 degrees Celsius.

“We also recently experienced a destructive wind force in Sibu because of this (climate change).”

Lau also expressed hope that the people would continue to take active roles in all initiatives towards building a green community.

“This will not only help build a better living space, but also for us to lead by example for our younger generation.

“I hope that through awareness programmes implemented by the government, it would help bring the people together in building a clean and green environment for the future,” he added.
