KUALA TERENGGANU: The Kuala Terengganu Court Complex was evacuated yesterday morning after police received a bomb threat.

Terengganu police chief Datuk Mazli Mazlan said they received a call from a security personnel at the complex at 7.30am about a package left in front of the court complex gate.

“A team from the Criminal Investigation Division and the Bomb Disposal Unit in Kuala Terengganu rushed to the scene immediately after the call.

“Upon inspection, the team found a package wrapped with A4 paper containing batteries. We believe there were also fragments from a torchlight inside the package,” he said when contacted.

He added police disposed of the material as no explosive elements were found.

Mazli said the case items were sent to the Terengganu Police Contingent Headquarters Forensic Unit for further assessment

“Police also conducted an inspection at the court complex. No other threats were found in the area,” he said, adding the motive of the case is still under investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.

A Malay-language daily had earlier cited sources as saying that police found a piece of paper with the words ‘the first warning’ written on it, wrapped together with the package.

The daily added that sections of the court complex were off limits to the public until 12.45pm.

The last bomb scare in the country happened in November last year when dozens of schools nationwide reported receiving anonymous calls about explosives planted in their premises.
