‘Limit children’s gadget screen time to protect their eyesight’

- James Ling

KAPIT: More children are experiencing eyesight problems due to too much screen time, said Baleh assemblyman Nicholas Kudi Jantai.

In this regard, he said parents should limit the amount of time their children spend on their devices or computers, whilst teachers should educate their students on the importance of looking after their eyes.

“Nowadays, it is not only adults or senior citizens who suffer eyesight problems.

“More young children are now wearing spectacles which, in my opinion, could be due to them spending long hours on their mobile phone or computer.

“So my advice to parents is to not let their children spend too much time on their gadgets because they need to rest their eyes,” he said.

Kudi said this when officiating at an eye-screening programme organised by Lions Club of Kapit at Poh Kiong Optical Centre here, yesterday morning.

The programme saw a total of 50 pupils from SK Lepong Baleh, SK Methodist and SK Sungai Amang have their eyes screened, with those found to have eyesight problem given a free pair of spectacles sponsored by the optical centre.

In praising the programme, Kudi said parents ought to make it a point to have their children’s eyesight checked and corrected if needed so as not to affect their studies in school.

“A pupil with good eyesight will be able to study better,” he said.

Among those present at the programme were Lions Club of Kapit president Kapitan Yap Hui Li, and board members Dr Sia Tih Kong, Penghulu Jenny Yu, Stanley Ling, Anna Chan, Ting King Yiing, Moonly Tiang, Munah Akun and Ting Bee Eng.

Also present were SK Lepong Baleh headmaster Unsung Jelaini and Poh Kiong Optical Centre owner Teng Mee Hieng.
