Floods: 283 people from three Debak villages evacuated

KUCHING: A total of 283 people from 78 families from three villages in Debak had been relocated to two flood evacuation centres (PPS) since 1.30am yesterday.

According to Sarawak Disaster Management Commi ee (SDMC), the three affected villages are Kampung Lalang, Kampung Bungey and Kampung Babu.

The first relief centre in the district was opened at 1.30am at Dewan Millenia, and the latest date showed that it was providing shelter to 141 villagers from 39 families.

The second PPS was set up at Dewan Perpaduan around noon, and as at 8pm last night, it was housing 212 villagers from 66 families.

Continuous rain had caused flooding in these villages and as such, the National Disaster Control Centre of the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) had, in its report, mentioned Sarawak as the latest state in the country to be hit by floods.

Meanwhile in Spaoh, the kindergart­eners at SK Paku Sentral were sent home yesterday morning a er floodwater­s rushed into the classroom.

In a statement, the Civil Defence Force (APM) said it received a report at 8.10am and personnel from the Spaoh station were mobilised to the school.

“Upon arriving at the school at 8.55am, it was discovered that the kindergart­en and one of the teachers’ quarters were flooded,” said APM.

It said the school headmaster permi ed the nine kindergart­en pupils to leave for home as a safety measure.

APM said by 9.30am, the weather had improved.

“The main school block was not affected by the flash floods, where the classes proceeded as normal,” said APM.

In Kuching, a relief centre to shelter families whose house was destroyed by a recent fire in Kampung Bintawa Hilir, was officially closed at 5pm.

The PPS, which was opened on Jan 5, provided shelter for 38 villagers from 12 families.
