State govt to consider including cycling lanes in road planning
KUCHING: The Sarawak government would consider including lanes dedicated to cyclists in its road planning, says Deputy Minister II for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.
Noting that there has been a sizeable community of cycling enthusiasts here, he believes that the provision of dedicated cycling lanes would safeguard the safety of the cyclists and other road users.
“One of the latest projects to be carried out soon by the state government in the Kuching North areas is the road improvement works on Jalan Sultan Tengah, from the roundabout near to Yayasan Sarawak up to Damai.
“I was briefed last week by Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) that dedicated cycling lanes spanning a distance of 26km would be built alongside the road,” said the Pantai Damai assemblyman when met a er the launch of ‘Kuching Car-Free Morning’ at Heroes Monument Park here yesterday.
On the event, which involved some 1,000 participants, Dr Abdul Rahman said it was a part of Kuching North City Commission (DBKU)’s efforts in promoting the wellbeing of the community and also the state capital as a tourist destination.
“Numerous iconic landmarks in Kuching can be spo ed along the routes listed for car-free morning programme, which include the Borneo Cultures Museum, Fort Margherita, Darul Hana bridge and English Tea House at Petra Jaya,” he said.
The state deputy minister also expressed hope that the nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) and tourists would also support the twice-a-month programme.
Among those present yesterday was Kuching North Datuk Bandar Hilmy Othman.
