SMA picks young duo for Road to Wira Cub Prix

- Ting Tieng Hee

Sarawak Motorsports Association (SMA) has identified 13-year-old Ahmad Harith Ikhwan and 22-year-old Wan Nadzmi Radzi Saadie to represent Sarawak following the ‘Road to Wira Cub Prix’ at the temporary race track at Sarawak Stadium Complex yesterday.

The two finished just behind Haegenstein Jackson Apong in the C1 & C2 race.

According to SMA president Senator Dato Ahmad Ibrahim, it was the first cub prix event organised since the Covid19 pandemic. He said various motorsports activities including workshops, races on motocross, drifting and time attack will be organised to further promote and develop motorsports in the state.

Motocross events will be held at Serikin and Sibu Jaya while national drift series will be held in Miri, Mukah and Kuching. Time attack and go-karting races are still in the planning stage.

SMA revealed that it is working closely with Youth and Sports Department (KBS) Sarawak, Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) and sponsors to develop motorsports in the state.

“Our biggest problem in organising motorsports events is the funding and looking for sponsors. We are indeed grateful to KBS and SSC for coming in to support this event today,” Ahmad said.

Meanwhile, SSC chief executive officer Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan said motorsports is one of the sports that SSC is hoping to help develop and they will provide the facilities and some funding.

“We have a racing track to run cub prix and car drifting events in Kuching but in Miri we have a proper go-karting race track where other racing events are also being held there.

“We have the facilities to organise racing events with some upgrading and improvements to making the track safe for racing and competitions,” he told The Borneo Post.
