KAPIT: SMK Kapit must continue to strive for excellence in educating and developing the potential of its students, said Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat.

The Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department said the dedication of the teachers over the years had transformed SMK Kapit into one of the well-established schools in the district.

“The achievements of the students in academics and co-curricular activities are testament of your concerted efforts to educate them.

“My hope is for SMK Kapit to continue striving towards becoming a school of excellence and producing well-mannered and well-educated students,” he said.

Jamit, who is Bukit Goram assemblyman, was speaking when officiating SMK Kapit’s excellence award presentation ceremony at the civic centre here on Friday.

Adding on, he called on schools in Kapit to be innovative and creative towards realising the country’s aspiration of producing quality students who are knowledgeable and disciplined.

“The role of educators today has changed from its traditional functions. Teachers must adopt

innovative teaching techniques and strategies, and to do so, you need to continuously enhance your knowledge for the benefit of your students.”

Jamit also reminded parents to be good examples for their children and not solely rely on teachers to be the primary educators.

“Parents are the first educators at home. Make sure they do their daily revision on what they learned in class during the day and take an interest in what they do.

“Guide and nurture them with good moral and spiritual values so that they can contribute positively to society in the years to come,” he said.

On the awards ceremony, Jamit congratulated the student recipients and reminded them not to rest on their laurels but to continue to improve themselves.

“For those who missed out on an award this year, use it as motivation to work harder in the new school year so that you will be one of the winners next time around.”

He also announced a government grant of RM30,000 for SMK Kapit, before presenting the recipients with their prizes and certificates.

Among those present were principal Jeffery Lias, Kapit deputy education officer Kumbong Garit, SMK Kapit senior assistants Henry Wong, Suliman Paulus Jujong, Rosman Sulaiman and Tiong Chong Min, and the school’s parent-teacher association chairman Walter Samat.
