KUCHING: The Magistrates’ Court here yesterday sentenced a man to a total of four years in jail after he pleaded guilty to crashing into a policeman with his motorcycle and obstructing the police in carrying out their duty.

Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi convicted Iqmal Zachry Kamal, 31, to two years in jail for each charge and ordered the sentences to run concurrently.

For the first offence, he was charged under Section 353 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to two years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Iqmal was charged under 186 of the Penal Code for the second offence, which provides for a jail term of not more than two years or a maximum fine of RM10,000 or both, upon conviction.

He committed both offences by the roadside of Jalan Bintawa Tengah at around 2.45pm on Jan 29, 2022.

Based on facts of the case, a team of police personnel including the victim who were on duty on the day of the incident, attempted to arrest Iqmal who was riding a motorcycle in a suspicious manner.

Iqmal, however, sped up and escaped, which prompted the victim to chase him.

During the pursuit, Iqmal’s motorcycle collided with the machine ridden by the victim, causing the latter to fall and injure his left leg.

Following that, the victim was sent by ambulance to the Sarawak General Hospital for treatment, while Iqmal who also fell but did not sustain any injuries, was arrested.

It is suspected that at the time of the incident, Iqmal had drugs in his possession.

Insp Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted, while Iqmal was not represented by counsel.
