MR D.I.Y’s ‘Wo AI Ni’ CNY webflick registers over 7 million views

LUMPUR: MR D.I.Y.’s Chinese New Year webfilm, titled ‘Wo Ai Ni’ (‘I Love You’ in Mandarin) has amassed over seven million views shortly after its debut on YouTube, TikTok, Facebook and Xiaohongsh­u.

Running for five minutes and 23 seconds, the short movie revolves around a boy named Hong and his family convening for their annual Chinese New Year’s Reunion at his grandfathe­r’s residence.

The usually-stern former headmaster, known for instilling a discipline­d, military-like routine, surprises everyone this year by being unusually expressive with his family.

The ‘Grandpa’ offers compliment­s, engages in discussion­s about his daughter’s mental health, and even joins in a trendy dance with his grandchild­ren.

Perturbed by his unusual behavior, the family does some digging – only to discover that ‘Grandpa’ has been seeking advice on love through an artificial intelligen­ce [AI] programme.

The film concludes with ‘Grandpa’ explaining his actions and also expressing love to his family with a heartfelt ‘I love you all.’

MR D.I.Y.’s group head of marketing Alex Goh remarked: “This Chinese New Year, we want to remind Malaysians that the most important thing is love, and one of the simplest, most meaningful ways to demonstrat­e love is to simply say ‘Wo Ai Ni’ to their loved ones.

“It is a phrase that holds so much meaning and magic, and immediatel­y makes a profound difference to an ordinary day or a festive celebratio­n.

“Our goal is to celebrate and promote love and compassion amongst Malaysians, recognisin­g that anything is possible with love.

“So thank you Malaysians for supporting this webfilm. It means a lot to us.”

As part of MR D.I.Y’s ‘Wo Ai Ni’ initiative this Chinese New Year, the webfilm is complement­ed by an ‘I Love Promotion’ at selected stores nationwide, featuring unique festive decor items and discounts on a range of household essentials.
