SHAH ALAM: Malaysia’s Junior golfers get to showcase their talent against their peers from over 10 Asia-Pacific region at the 100plus Srixon Junior Championship to be held from July 29 to Aug 1, at the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club, here.

Sanctioned by the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA), the 54-hole event that would be counted for World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points, is expected to draw around 90 golfers including from Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, China, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam among others.

Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd’s (F&N) Foods and Industry Engagement Managing Director Datuk Raffiq Md Ariff said, competing against the best junior golfers from the region, will allow the local juniors to gauge their level and benchmark themselves.

“For our youth players to develop into better amateurs and future professionals, they must be exposed to high-level competitions from a young age to build their skill sets. Current professionals like Gavin Green and Kelly Tan were former champions of this event, and along with so many other young Malaysian golfers had benefited from playing here,” he said after launching the championship here, yesterday.

In addition to the main competitions (Division A) for boys and girls aged between 14-17, a development category (Division B) will also be contested for boys and girls aged between 11-13.

For domestic junior golfers, they can qualify for the tournament through two qualifying series events which will be held at the Templer Park Country Club in Rawang, Selangor from May 6-9 (for Peninsular Malaysia) and Miri Golf Club, Sarawak from June 10-13 (East Malaysia).

Over 100 golfers are expected to tee-off in each of the qualifying round, where a total of 30 best golfers are expected to make the cut for the grand final. — Bernama
