SAMARAHAN: Sarawak Muaythai Association (PMNS) has continued its efforts to promote muaythai to all levels of society in the state.

Most recently, PMNS through Phoenix Meranek Muaythai Club was involved in the “Let’s Try Muaythai” programme in conjunction with the Samarahan Esports Championship X Culture & Digital.

The programme was organised at The Summermall, Kota Samarahan last Sunday.

Twenty members of the Phoenix Meranek were involved while nearly 100 visitors including participants of the esports championships took part in the programme which commenced at 9am.

At 4.30pm, the muaythai club exponents performed various demonstrations, including the Muay Boran, to welcome the arrival of Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Dato Rubiah Wang who is also Kota Samarahan MP, and Simunjan assemblyman Awla Dris.

The Muay Boran, an ancient muaythai fighting style, was performed by Wan Shahmi Rizal and Hasbullah while 15 others performed basic and combo performances.

According to PMNS president Jumaat Ibrahim, the inclusion of muaythai in the programme on an invitational slot proves that the sport is gaining a place in the community just like every other combat sports.

“This invitation proves that the superiors recognise muaythai and is on par with other sports in the state.

“It is a very positive development because it is our hope to spread this sport throughout Sarawak, especially in rural areas.

“This is very important because from programmes like this, we may be able to produce new talents who will continue Sarawak’s legacy of excellence in muaythai,” he said when contacted.

Phoenix Meranek Muaythai Club is an affiliate of the Samarahan Muaythai Association which is affiliated to PMNS.

Also present at the event were Phoenix Meranek president Zaidi Wasli and Samarahan Muaythai Association secretary Baharom Ahmad.

Samarahan Division Electronic Sports Club president Terzuden Kiprawi managed the programme.
