School commended for instilling Chinese culture in pupils
MIRI: Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I Datuk Sebastian Ting commended SMK Chung Hua Miri for instilling appreciation for Chinese culture in its pupils through its annual activities, including Chinese calligraphy writing programme and the lions’ eye-do ing ceremony.
“Every year, before Chinese New Year, a special occasion will be held at the school. Students of different races will get together and enjoy a session of calligraphy writing.
“Therea er, there will be an eye-do ing ceremony on the new lions’ heads, which will be used for the lion dance performances during the Chinese New Year celebration.
“Although on the surface this seems like just another activity, it is actually promoting Chinese culture among its students, and the epitome of Sarawak’s unity is the acceptance of the cultures of all races and religions,” Ting told reporters a er officiating at the event, at the Chinese primary school here yesterday.
The Piasau assemblyman also declared open the school’s newlycompleted basketball courts – a RM150,000 project funded under the Piasau constituency’s Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) 2022 grant.
Ting, joined by Sunny Ting who represented the school’s board of directors’ chairperson Tan Sri Datuk Paduka Chai Yu Lan, performed the eye-do ing ceremony on 10 new lions’ heads.
Also present were the school’s board of directors’ vice chairman Chai Min Kian, secretary Rita Ting, principal Lai Jia Ling, and other board members.
Meanwhile, the school management announced that the Lion Dance Club of SMK Chung Hua Miri was preparing special performance packages, including the 24-season drum and a ‘God of Fortune’ special mascot for any special event here. The price ranges from RM638 to RM688. The lion dance performance will be available for performances running from 8am to 5pm.
Proceeds from this would be used to fund the club, as well as to improve the school’s facilities.
