KUCHING: Twenty-one students of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus (Swinburne Sarawak) received their English Enhancement Programme (EEP) certificate at a presentation ceremony at the campus on Feb 2.

The ceremony which marked the culmination of the four-week programme was graced with the presence of university’s pro vicechancellor and chief executive officer, Ir Professor Lau Hieng Ho, alongside members of the Executive Group and students’ parents.

“The EEP is fully sponsored by Yayasan Sarawak and is tailored to enhance the English proficiency of Sarawakian students,” said the university in a statement.

This programme, it added, aimed to equip students with the necessary language skills and support for their academic journey at Swinburne Sarawak.

“The participants not only had their tuition fees covered, but also received a one-off RM300 settling-in allowance and free on-campus accommodation throughout the programme.

“Upon completing the EEP; students have the opportunity to seamlessly articulate into various foundation, diploma, or degree programmes offered at Swinburne Sarawak,” it said.

Lecturer Marione Anne Foo, meanwhile, highlighted the programme’s immersive environment which focused on academic reading and writing, communication and other essential skills.

“The EEP curriculum which includes motivational workshops and personal awareness sessions, cover a range of topics such as self-care, library literacy, laboratory skills and an introduction to student clubs and societies,” said Foo, adding that this built the students’ interpersonal and intrapersonal skills.

The programme, she added, had also enabled students to explore and adapt to the life in the campus, as well as for them to engage in social and networking events.

The participants, who were students from the January cohort, also shared their positive feedback on the programme.

Muhammad Fawwaz Fakhri said EEP had boosted his confidence in speaking English, while Jap Kai Huai described it as enjoyable and beneficial.

Phoebe Lo Zhi Xuan, on the other hand, shared her experience of making new friends and gaining self-confidence.
