Premier: Redelineation proposal to include engagement session with GPS component parties

MIRI: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will carry out an engagement session with its component parties before submi ing to the Election Commission (EC) its proposal for a redelineation exercise.

Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the EC had informed the state government that there was a possibility of revision over the electoral boundaries in the state.

“Because the EC has informed us of a possible revise, we will submit our proposals,” said the GPS chairman when asked about the possible redelineation exercise involving several constituencies across Sarawak.

He was met at the Minister of Transport Sarawak Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin’s Chinese New Year (CNY) open house at Jalan Woodhouse here yesterday.

Asked about how many constituencies would be involved in the exercise, and whether Senadin was one of them, Abang Johari replied: “I do not know.”

He added: “We will engage the SPR (Malay abbreviation for the EC); we will look at how many they propose, because the process is that we have engagement session first involving all component parties in GPS, and then present the proposals to EC to study them and counter the proposals.”

Sarawak had its last redelineation exercise in 2015.

It is rumoured that the Senadin constituency would be among the constituencies to undergo redelineation, in view of its current population that is estimated to be more than 200,000.

In the last general election, Senadin listed 68,564 registered voters.
