SMK Sebuyau still in sorry state despite new site approved 10 years ago

KUCHING: Several buildings at SMK Sebuyau, including its multipurpose hall, are currently in dilapidated and unsafe condition, says Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi.

In a Facebook post, the Sebuyau assemblyman called upon the federal Ministry of Education (MoE) to give immediate attention on expediting the construction of a new block to house SMK Sebuyau.

According to him, the site for the new building is already available, to be under the Sebuyau New Township expansion area, but there has been not much progress despite the allocation having already been approved by MoE almost 10 years ago.

He observed that the hall could no longer be used as dining hall for the boarding students, forcing them to instead have their meals at open spaces.

“It’s sad to see the boarding students who have to be provided with a dining space outside, with a canopy and a table in the open space for eating.

“The same goes for the place to prepare food for them.

“The hall, in its existing condition, cannot be used as a dining area,” he said.

Adding on, Julaihi revealed that he had allocated RM500,000 under his constituency’s Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) grant to build a new multi-purpose hall in SMK Sebuyau.

He said the new hall would be built at a space next to a futsal court.

He also said there were other buildings that were also in a dilapidated and unsafe condition, but continued to be used because there were no other options.

“I hope that this situation would gain the immediate attention of the Ministry of Education,” stressed Julaihi.
