Inaugural criterium race in Miri attracts over 200 cyclists

The city is set to host its first-ever criterium cycling race the Miri Criterium 1.0 - on Feb 18.

Organised by the Masterpiec­e Cycling Club, the event aims to invigorate local tourism, boost commerce, and foster community involvemen­t through the sport of cycling.

The race will kick off at 6am and run until 12 noon along Jalan Marina 5.

“Participan­ts will tackle a challengin­g two kilometres circuit, vying for victory across seven categories, namely Men Elite, Men Master A, Men Junior, Men Veteran, Men Master B, Women Open, and Minivelo.

“With RM10,000 in cash prizes and prestigiou­s trophies up for grabs, the Miri Criterium 1.0 guarantees fierce competitio­n and unforgetta­ble moments on the track,” the organiser said in a statement.

Anticipati­on is already running high, with 222 riders from around the world gearing up to participat­e.

“Among them, 28 internatio­nal cyclists hailing from Germany, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Canada, and Brunei will add to the event’s global flair.

“Additional­ly, 194 local cyclists from Sarawak and Sabah, representi­ng cities such as Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Bintulu, and Mukah, are eager to showcase their skills on the internatio­nal stage,” it added.

Meanwhile, motorists are advised to exercise extra caution and consider alternativ­e routes during the event, as road closures will be in effect on Jalan Marina 5 (full closure), Jalan Marina Utama (partial closure), and Jalan Brighton (partial closure) to ensure the safety of all participan­ts and spectators.

“More than just a race, the Miri Criterium 1.0 embodies the spirit of cycling, community engagement, and the promotion of Miri as a premier sports tourism destinatio­n.

“The members of the public here are invited to join us in cheering on the cyclists throughout their route and experience the thrill of world-class competitiv­e cycling firsthand,” the organiser added.
