KUCHING: Students from Traditional Wing Chun Kuen Kuching excelled in the online competition of the Singapore International Wudebei Traditional Martial Arts Tournament held at Warren Country Club from Dec 1 to 15.

The association had fielded 70 students who submitted more than 200 entries and they bagged 23 gold, 22 silver and 18 bronze medals.

Traditional Wing Chun Kuen Kuching head instructor Michael Chai Kau Yuee was delighted with his students’ achievement and said they had brought glory to Sarawak and Malaysia.

“The online competition provided a good platform for the students to showcase their skills.

“There was also a physical competition but we opted to join the online competition,” Chai told The Borneo Post yesterday.

“This is a good improvement when compared to the one gold and nine silvers that we won in 2020 and 15 golds, 20 silvers and 16 bronzes won in 2022,” he said.

He is planning to sent his students to the physical competition that will probably be organised in Malaysia next year.

“Traditional Wing Chun Kuen Kuching was established in 2019 and currently we have more than 200 students aged between five and 70.

“Wing Chun is easy to learn and suitable for young and old people and a very good from of martial arts and self-defence.

“When it comes to practical self-defence, Wing Chun’s effectiveness in close-quarters hand-to-hand combat is pretty hard to beat.

“This is why realistic selfdefence experts often choose Wing Chun because of its in-close pressure fighting specialty,” said Chai who is fourth generation disciple of Wing Chun founder Ip Man.

He has also won many accolades in the International Wudebei Traditional Wushu Competition, Singapore International Wushu Zi Jin Cup Championship and Chen ZhengLei Cup.

According to Chai, Wing Chun’s effectiveness lies in its emphasis upon simplicity and functionality over fancy, inefficient movements and that everything Wing Chun does is direct and to the point.

Wing Chun has only three forms namely Siu Lim Tao, Chum Kiu and Biu Jee.

“The students’ main interest in learning Wing Chun come from the movie ‘Ip Man’ which caused a sensation around the world and today we have seven million people learning Wing Chun,” he related.

Those who are interested to learn Wing Chun can contact him at 016-4540447 or come to the training centre at P10-G8B, Chonglin Park, Jalan Tabuan.
