Wishesland Miri unveils BisFed-defined boccia court

MIRI: Sarawak’s boccia team is targeting to win four gold medals in this year’s Para Sukma to be held from Sept 21-29.

This was disclosed by Minister of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Developmen­t Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah. The team bagged two golds, one silver and three bronzes in the last Para Sukma in 2022.

The minister was speaking at the opening ceremony of Wishesland Miri Boccia hall yesterday. Also present were Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, Datuk Sebastian Ting and Wishesland Miri president Eunice Ho.

According to Fatimah, as part of the preparatio­n for Para Sukma 2024, a total of 18 Sarawak boccia athletes and officials will be going to South Korea for a week for training and friendly matches. She noted that Wishesland Miri’s Tay Boon Seng is a national champion in the Boccia sport. Three other Wishesland Miri members have also been selected as reserves for the state team.

All state boccia players based in Miri will be training at the Wishesland Miri Boccia hall which is the first such court in Sarawak built following BisFed (Boccia Internatio­nal Sport Federation) requiremen­ts.

Fatimah thanked Ting for arranging the RM250,000 government grant to build the hall.

“We look forward to witnessing the positive impact this facility will have on the lives of countless individual­s for years to come,” she added. Wishesland Miri offers physiother­apy, hydrothera­py, occupation­al therapy and other services for children with cerebral palsy.
