-

KANOWIT: Thirty women members of Neighbourhood Committee (KRT) Nanga Ngungun Zone 1 took part in the ‘Buri’ handicraft class last weekend.

Held at Rumah Taboh Rimau in Nanga Ngungun here, the class was part of the activities planned by KRT Nanga Ngungun Zone 1 for this year.

The objectives were to instil creativity in craft making, foster the spirit of unity among the participants, and to equip them with new skills.

Speaking at the opening of the class, Ngemah assemblyman’s wife Gelim Utan hoped that the participants could improve their socio economy by selling ‘buri’ handicrafts.

“It is also my wish to promote handicraft-making in the Ngemah area.

“Not just ‘buri’ but also other handicrafts such as weaving, beadworks, ‘sugu tinggi’making and others that can generate income, especially for housewives,” she said.

KRT Nanga Ngungun Zone 1 chairperson Councillor Mutang Karani, in her speech earlier, expressed her appreciation and gratitude to Gelim for the initiative to hold the class.

She also thanked the ‘buri’ teachers, Winnie Adam and Aidawati, for their willingness to share their knowledge with the participants.

Winnie, who hails from Nanga Tada and has seven years of experience in ‘buri’-making, said she was very proud that the handicrafts were becoming more popular.

“I am very proud of those who are interested in learning handicrafts, especially the ‘buri’, because they can generate income by selling them.

“I also hope that everyone would not just focus on ‘buri’ skirts.

“They can use their own creativity to make ‘buri’ clothes, shawl, hat and others,” she said.
