Sarawak mourns demise of Taib
Tributes pour in across the nation for former governor, chief minister
The demise of Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, the Father of Modern Sarawak, is a tremendous loss for the region and Malaysia as he had paved the way not only for Sarawak’s progress but also raised it as a beacon of harmony for the country.
Following the passing of the former governor in a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur at 4.40am yesterday at the age of 87, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and other state rulers as well as political leaders from throughout the country have paid tribute to Taib.
In a post on his official Facebook page, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia and the Queen, Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah conveyed their condolences to Taib’s family.
“The late Abdul Taib made a significant impact and will always be remembered, especially by the people of the Land of the Hornbills. Al-Fatihah,” the post read.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg pledged to continue Taib’s legacy, especially in efforts to develop Sarawak and Malaysia in a more structured approach.
“On behalf of the people of Sarawak, we certainly feel the loss of a leader who served the people of Malaysia throughout his life, especially the people of Sarawak.
“As his successor, I pledge that we will continue his efforts to develop Sarawak and Malaysia in a more structured approach, especially in the need for energy transition globally,” he said.
The Premier was in Kuala Lumpur yesterday for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Petronas and the Sarawak government for the establishment of an ammonia factory for the international market.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in a message on Facebook also expressed his condolences to the people of Sarawak for the loss.
“Saddened by the passing of the former Yang di-Pertua Negeri and Chief Minister of Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Hj Abdul Taib Mahmud early this morning.
“We, especially the people of Sarawak, lost a respected statesman,” said the Prime Minister.
Anwar, who is also Minister of Finance, said Taib’s deeds and services to the country and Sarawak will always be remembered forever.
“Al-Fatihah,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said Sarawak has lost a leader who had contributed greatly to the people and development of the state.
“Heartfelt condolences to the family and may Allah show mercy on his soul,” he said in a statement.
