Man involved in Julau gangsterism case pays RM100 fine
SIBU: The Sarikei Magistrates’ Court sentenced a man involved in a recent gangsterism case in Julau to one day in jail, or a fine of RM100.
Julau police chief DSP Andam Sulin, in a statement, said the suspect chose to pay the fine.
He said three other suspects in the case were made prosecution witnesses with a bond of RM4,000, without deposit, with one local surety. The three were also investigated and would be charged under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 after they tested positive for benzo and ketamine.
The Section provides for a maximum imprisonment term of two years or maximum RM5,000 fine, as well as a minimum of two years supervision after serving the sentence. Andam confirmed that police received a report from Julau MP Larry Sng on Feb 11 regarding provocation from a group of men.
“Investigation has found that one of the suspects pushed Sng’s supporter. The supporter suffered a ‘soft tissue injury’ at the back of his head,” Andam said.
Acting upon the information, police arrested four suspects on Feb 12 at around 6pm, within 24 hours after the report was filed.
On Feb 21, one of the suspects was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, while the other three were made prosecution witnesses under Section 118 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
“I urge members of the public not to do anything that will cause unwanted incidents. The police will not hesitate to take stern action against them,” added Andam.
On Feb 16, Julau MP Larry Sng confirmed he filed a police report after encountering four alleged gangsters who had demanded ‘angpows (cash packets) from him.
According to Sng, the men had argued with his supporters and even pushed one to the ground.
