Comply with MBKS’ maintenance standards, mayor calls on contractors

-

KUCHING: Contractors handling road maintenance and drainclearing works on areas under the jurisdiction of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) jurisdiction could have their contracts terminated should they fail to meet expectations.

In giving this stern reminder, Mayor of Kuching South Dato Wee Hong Seng said conversely, those who had performed well would be considered or recommended for contract extensions for future tasks or projects, or a one-plusone contract as practice.

He highlighted this during a briefing with the contractors and the community leaders here yesterday.

“MBKS must register those poor contractors under the Contractors and Consultants Registration and Rating System (CoRRIS) based on State Financial Secretary Circular 12/2023.

“Thus, I would want to remind the contractors about the existing demerit point system, which has been implemented to ensure compliance with the council’s maintenance standards.

“Under this system, the contractors are being evaluated based on their performance, and demerit points will be issued for any shortcomings or lapses in any works.”

On the briefing, Wee said the objective was to provide contractors with a comprehensive overview of the scope of works involved in MBKS’ maintenance of road verges and drain-clearing, as per the contracts.

“Do carry out your duties with high integrity and good code of ethics in order to minimise non-compliance, and never take your responsibility lightly or for granted.

“All contractors must take note that their tasks also include clearing of all debris from the sites, and this must be properly disposed of a“er work.

“Nevertheless, all of you deserve the right to voice out and put forward any problems or issues to the council so that such ma•ers can be dealt with and possible solutions can be reached.”

On a separate subject, Wee encouraged residents to create roo“op gardens or participate in community composting programmes to improve the quality of green spaces.

“People can make these small steps in their own neighbourhoods to support sustainable cities on a worldwide level. This would improve our physical and psychological health, strengthen our community values, and beautify our city,” he said.
