King gives greenlight for stern action against MPs who overstep boundaries in Parliament

-

KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has given the ‘greenlight’ to the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat and the President of Dewan Negara to take stern action against any member of the Dewan Rakyat or Dewan Negara who ‘oversteps the boundaries’.

His Majesty, in his inaugural royal address at the opening of the First Meeting of the Third Session of the 15th Parliament yesterday, said the action would include imposing a 14day ban if the MPs remained stubborn.

“I would like to remind you that this Parliament is a place where lawmakers gather to enact rules, and the ‘Yang Berhormat’ are the lawmakers.

“It is absurd if the lawmakers fail to comply with the rules enacted.

“Therefore, I hope that all members of Parliament (MPs) would set a good example when they are in this honourable Dewan Rakyat.

“Maintaining decorum, instead of insulting each other. Looking at the behaviour of the MPs in the past si ing, I would be ashamed to even enter this Dewan Rakyat,” said Sultan Ibrahim.

Also present at the ceremony was Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia.

Sultan Ibrahim decreed that the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat and the President of Dewan Negara must firmly carry out their duties, to ensure that all MPs and senators would comply with the rules throughout the si ing.

His Majesty also reminded all government and opposition MPs to remain united, and work together to develop the country for the benefit of all Malaysians.

“In my opinion, the success or failure of this country does not rest on the shoulders of the Prime Minister alone, but also on the shoulders of all 222 members of the Dewan Rakyat, who have been entrusted by the people as their representatives in the government,” said His Majesty.

Earlier, Their Majesties’ arrival at Parliament Square at 10 am, were greeted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Also present were the two Deputy Prime Ministers, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof; Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Johari Abdul and Dewan Negara President Datuk Mutang Tagal.

KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, said he would not entertain any requests from any party attempting to disrupt the political stability of the country.

In his inaugural Royal Address at the opening of the First Meeting of the Third Session of the 15th Parliament yesterday, His Majesty said all parties must accept the reality and respect the Unity Government that had been formed.

Sultan Ibrahim, who was installed as Malaysia’s 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Jan 31, also stressed that if there were parties intending to play politics, they should wait for the upcoming election period.

“All parties are aware that my priority is the well-being of over 33 million Malaysians out there.

“Therefore, I hope all members of Parliament will focus their efforts on safeguarding the livelihoods of the people, rather than prioritising their own agendas or of their political parties,” he said.

Earlier, Sultan Ibrahim expressed his appreciation to Pahang Sultan Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Mustafa Billah Shah and Tengku Ampuan of Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah for their just and wise leadership over the past five years.

“God-willing, with His grace and permission, I will shoulder the entrusted responsibility with honesty and sincerity, and continue the leadership by prioritising the prosperity of the nation and the well-being of the people,” said His Majesty.

Al-Sultan Abdullah concluded his term as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Jan 30. Sultan Ibrahim also expressed his appreciation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the government administration for their effective governance.

His Majesty reminded them to always feel the pulse of the people as it was the government’s duty to safeguard their interests.
