Senior police officers attend course on anti-human trafficking
A six-day course on anti-human trafficking was held recently, with the main objective of enhancing law enforcement capabilities in Sarawak and Sabah, especially on enhancing senior police officers’ knowledge and understanding of the AntiTrafficking in Persons and AntiSmuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Act 2007.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Dato Mancha Ata is optimistic that after this course, the senior officers will gain the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively control, guide and serve as a reference in cases involving Atipsom.
“Today, we see a total of 48 senior police officers, 20 from Sabah and 28 from Sarawak, who have attended this course,” said Mancha at the closing ceremony yesterday, adding that this would result in more criminal charges being taken against suspects arrested in connection with human trafficking.
“The senior officers will now have better abilities to gauge the progress of investigations in strict adherence to the correct rules and procedures.”
He also said the programme would help raise the awareness among police officers of their roles and responsibilities in any surveillance operations at the district level to reach the key performance indicators (KPI) set by Bukit Aman.
Over the six-day course, 16 sessions were held involving speakers from the Sarawak Attorney General’s Chambers, Sarawak Labour Department and two non-governmental organisations: the International Justice Mission, and Stop Human Trafficking.
Also present at the closing ceremony were CID deputy director DCP Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa, CID deputy director (intelligence/operations) DCP Fadil Marsus, Sarawak deputy police commissioner Datuk Ibrahim Darus and AntiTrafficking in Persons and AntiSmuggling of Migrants Council division secretary Syuhaida Abdul Wahab Zen.
