‘Politics can make significant changes in society’
SIBU: The active involvement of women in politics has been proven to bring about significant changes in society.
In highlighting this, Kho Teck Wan, a political secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, encourages more women to join politics.
“Everyone has the opportunity to be involved in politics. This involvement is not about socialising, but rather, it is about making decisions that can shape the future of Sarawak, specifically through elections.
“I encourage all fellow women, regardless of age and backgrounds, to continue participating in politics and striving for empowerment,” she said in her speech for a dinner gathering hosted by the Bawang Assan branch of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Women at a hotel here last Sunday.
The event was held in connection with International Women’s Day 2024 celebration.
Kho, also SUPP Central Women’s chief, described political participation as ‘an effective way to bring about positive social changes’.
“Every individual decision has the potential to impact the future of Sarawak.
“Just like in SUPP – we had been consistently and relentlessly proposing for the recognition of the UEC (Unified Examination Certificate for those attending Chinesemedium secondary schools) every year, until it finally obtained it (recognition).
“The free vaccination policy, proposed by the party in 2022, stands as another example.
“The Sovereign Wealth Fund was initially proposed by SUPP at its delegates assembly in 2020, and was eventually approved by the state government in 2023 with an allocation of RM8 billion.
“All these examples signify how political participation can contribute to positive changes in Sarawak,” she elaborated.
Also present at the Women’ Day 2024 dinner was SUPP Bawang Assan chairman Robert Lau, its community and development committee head Councillor Kevin Lau, SUPP Bawang Assan Women’s chief Katherine Wong and event’s chairperson Ngu Yu Yu.
