KUCHING: The motorists passing Jalan Pakan-Ulu Kota should enjoy comfortable travelling once all seven new concrete bridges along the stretched are fully completed.

At present, the progress of works on replacing the existing semi-concrete bridges along the 7.4km road stands at 80 per cent and thus, the project should reach completion by the first quarter of next year.

According to Pakan assemblyman Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom, the project cost is RM127.9 million.

“The government has provided RM127.9 million for this Jalan Pakan-Ulu Kota Phase 3 project.

“It covers 7.4km from Nanga Kara to Ulu Kota, including the seven new bridges,” he said in a statement, issued in connection with an inspection conducted on the project site recently.

Additionally, Mawan said the Jalan Pakan-Ulu Kota would be connected to Jalan Ulu Paku, and set to become a second state trunk road, reducing the travelling distance between Betong and Sarikei by 50km.

The assemblyman said he was committed to bringing further development into Pakan and its surrounding areas for the betterment of the community’s well-being, on top of boosting regional economic growth.

He added that Phase I works on the Jalan Pakan-Ulu Kota, stretching for around 13km to link Pakan and Nanga Marau and costing RM63 million, reached completion in 2005, while Phase 2, costing RM122.5 million and spanning 15.4km linking Nanga Marau and Nanga Kara, was completed in 2010.
