Julaihi: Urgent need to stop loss of non-revenue water in Limbang

-

The rate of loss of non-revenue water in Limbang Division needs to be overcome immediately, said Utility and Telecommunication Minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi.

Julaihi said the issue has been a rather difficult challenge for water supply in the division.

As such, he said water intake sources and the construction of new water treatment plants are urgently needed.

He said new pipelines need to be installed and old pipes replaced in areas already identified by the relevant authorities.

“For the record, water treatment plants throughout Limbang Division (located in Limbang and Lawas districts) can produce 87 million litres per day (MLD) of treated water compared to the demand for water of 40 MLD,” he said in a Facebook post.

On Tuesday, Julaihi visited the Sungai Limbang Raw Water Intake, which is located 27km from the Limbang office of Laku Management Sdn Bhd, the water authority for Sarawak’s northern areas.

He then proceeded to visit the Berawan Limbang Water Treatment Plant, which can now produce 40 MLD of treated water.

“Before visiting both the Sungai Limbang Water Intake site and the Berawan Limbang Treatment Plant, I was briefed by Laku Management and Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) on the latest water supply situation in Limbang Division (Limbang and Lawas districts), water supply issues and challenges in Limbang Division, and the immediate and long-term planning to enable Limbang division to get full water supply,” he added.

Among those present during the visit were Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication permanent secretary Jafri Lias and deputy permanent secretary Syed Fauzi Sahab, Laku Management chief executive officer Daneil Punang, JBALB director Awang Fadillah Awang Reduan, and Laku Limbang water manager Muries Lukong.
