Kolej Komuniti Kuching students in field visit to Bakong longhouse

-

Thirty-three architectural technology students of Kolej Komuniti Kuching recently made a field trip to an Iban longhouse in Bakong near here, as part of the institution’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.

The visit from March 1 to 3 to Rumah Juliana Esah in Sungai Mallang Atas was led by Architectural Technology Certificate Programme head Mohd Zulkarnain Salehudin, and Corporate Communication Unit head Judy Henry.

According to Judy, the field trip carried out through the CSR programme aimed to help the students experience the research techniques that are used in producing drawings and making models for existing buildings.

“In addition, the community service programme organised by the Corporate Communications Unit of Kolej Komuniti Kuching reflects its commitment in contributing to the well-being of the community living in the outskirts of the city,” she said.

Their initiative, she added, had received good response and cooperation from the longhouse residents.

Mohd Zulkarnain, meanwhile, remarked the CSR programme as a good platform for the sharing of knowledge and life skills between the students and the community, as well as to promote Kolej Komuniti Kuching to the rural community.

“Students are exposed to a learning environment outside the classroom, of which it has boosted their creativity, selfconfidence, skills and knowledge,” he said.

Adding on, he said the technical and vocational education and training (TVET)-based services provided by the students had in fact helped promote the institution to the rural community.

On a separate note, longhouse chief Juliana Esah expressed hope that the CSR project could help the residents with their application on the housing loan scheme under the Sarawak Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Programme.

According to Juliana, 11 families of the longhouse had already applied for the housing loan scheme for the construction of 11 additional ‘bilik’ or units – making it a 22-door longhouse once completed.
