The service team from Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Padungan and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Friendly Neighbourhood have joined forces to reach out to the victims of the fire that struck Ewe Hai Street in the city’s old bazaar here last week.
SUPP Padungan chairperson Datuk Lily Yong, who led the delegation, said some of the victims were not the owners of the premises damaged by the fire.
It is reported that six shoplots at Ewe Hai Street were affected by the incident that occurred last Saturday, four of which were destroyed.
“We have learned that some of those occupying the shoplots are not the owners, but they are renting the premises. After the fire, they could not locate the owners.
“Given this scenario, SUPP Padungan service team together with DBKU Friendly Neighbourhood are rendering assistance for these victims,” she said when met during the visit yesterday.
Among those in the delegation was Georgina Chong, a lawyer by profession, who came to offer professional advice and answer queries posed by the victims.
Besides, Kuching South councillor Nicholas Wung was also present to offer assistance including making sure that the fire victims had lodged police reports, which were necessary for submission of insurance claims.
It is learnt that the affected shophouses are units No. 74, No. 76, No. 78, No. 80, No. 82 and No. 84 at Ewe Hai Street, and two of which were not insured.
Chong, also head of DBKU Friendly Neighbourhood, said the visit was aimed at helping the victims rebuild the premises so as to facilitate the resumption of business.
