KCCC: RM1 flat rate bus service can help ease traffic jam in Kapit

-

KAPIT: The Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) has been asked to approve the RM1 flat rate bus service as a way to resolve traffic congestion in Kapit town.

The call was made by Kapit Chinese Chamber of Commerce (KCCC) chairman Sii Bang Ee, who said severe traffic jams have been a long-standing issue for motorists here.

“Implementing the RM1 flat rate service will encourage more people to use the bus instead of driving into town.

“We at KCCC hope the ministry will approve this service, and also for our elected people’s representatives to help raise this matter with the relevant authorities to resolve the traffic congestion issue,” he said.

Sii was speaking during the chamber’s annual general meeting held here Sunday evening.

According to him, the presence of schools, government facilities, health clinic, bus terminal, industrial park and the Bletih State Complex along Jalan Bletih means the road is congested almost daily, triggering frustration among motorists.

KCCC committee member Dato Yong Hua Sying, who also spoke during the meeting, concurred with Sii and related his own experience earlier that day.

“This morning I was driving back from Sibu and arrived at Jalan Bletih around 10.30am. I only reached Bletih bazaar after 12pm even though the distance was only about 5km.

“Imagine the frustration of being struck inside your car and not being able to do anything,” said Yong.

Separately, Sii expressed his disappointment at the low turnout of KCCC members for the annual general meeting.

He said the chamber has over 250 members but many had failed to turn up despite having been given early notice.

“I hope to see more members attend future meetings.”

Among those present were deputy chairman Kapitan Yiap Yii Hoo, vice chairman Thomas Tong, secretary Kapitan Ling Hung Pin, assistant secretary Lin Kong Sie, treasurer Wong Kie Wei and assistant treasurer Kapitan Yap Hui Li.
