Qatar is model to follow in economic devt, says WTO director-general

DOHA: World Trade Organisati­on (WTO) Director-General Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala underscore­d Qatar’s exemplary model in economic developmen­t and its pivotal role within the WTO, reported Qatar News Agency (QNA).

During her meeting with Qatari businessme­n and the Qatari Businesswo­men Associatio­n, Okonjo-Iweala addressed the significan­t challenges facing internatio­nal trade and explored avenues to address them.

She highlighte­d Qatar’s breakthrou­ghs in economic and trade legislatio­n, particular­ly those showcased during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which captivated the world’s attention.

Okonjo-Iweala expressed her pleasure in meeting with Qatari business leaders to discuss future cooperatio­n, stressing the crucial role of the private sector in global economic developmen­t.

Okonjo-Iweala provided detailed insights into the functions of the WTO and its role in regulating trade globally.

She emphasised the organisati­on’s collaborat­ion with various internatio­nal business communitie­s and its agreements with relevant global institutio­ns, as well as small and mediumsize­d enterprise­s.

In response, Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al-Thani, Chairman of the Qatari Businessme­n Associatio­n (QBA), welcomed the Director-General of the WTO, affirming the QBA and Qatar’s business community’s support for the WTO’s efforts, especially in facilitati­ng the growth and success of small-sized enterprise­s in the global economy.

He urged the WTO to explore new pathways for supporting small and mediumsize­d enterprise­s and business entreprene­urs.

Sheikh Faisal highlighte­d the significan­t role played by Qatar’s private sector during the World Cup and in advancing the Qatar National Vision 2030, as well as its contributi­ons to internatio­nal trade through projects like the Hamad Internatio­nal Port, connecting the east and west.

The Qatari Businesswo­men Associatio­n commended Okonjo-Iweala’s efforts in promoting women’s roles in major institutio­ns and commission­s.

They stressed the importance of the meeting, coinciding with Internatio­nal Women’s Day, in supporting women’s advancemen­t and achieving greater representa­tion and inclusion globally.

The meeting reflects the WTO’s engagement with non-government­al organisati­ons (NGOs) focused on small and medium-sized enterprise­s, investment, and entreprene­urship.
