Qatar is model to follow in economic devt, says WTO director-general
DOHA: World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala underscored Qatar’s exemplary model in economic development and its pivotal role within the WTO, reported Qatar News Agency (QNA).
During her meeting with Qatari businessmen and the Qatari Businesswomen Association, Okonjo-Iweala addressed the significant challenges facing international trade and explored avenues to address them.
She highlighted Qatar’s breakthroughs in economic and trade legislation, particularly those showcased during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which captivated the world’s attention.
Okonjo-Iweala expressed her pleasure in meeting with Qatari business leaders to discuss future cooperation, stressing the crucial role of the private sector in global economic development.
Okonjo-Iweala provided detailed insights into the functions of the WTO and its role in regulating trade globally.
She emphasised the organisation’s collaboration with various international business communities and its agreements with relevant global institutions, as well as small and mediumsized enterprises.
In response, Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al-Thani, Chairman of the Qatari Businessmen Association (QBA), welcomed the Director-General of the WTO, affirming the QBA and Qatar’s business community’s support for the WTO’s efforts, especially in facilitating the growth and success of small-sized enterprises in the global economy.
He urged the WTO to explore new pathways for supporting small and mediumsized enterprises and business entrepreneurs.
Sheikh Faisal highlighted the significant role played by Qatar’s private sector during the World Cup and in advancing the Qatar National Vision 2030, as well as its contributions to international trade through projects like the Hamad International Port, connecting the east and west.
The Qatari Businesswomen Association commended Okonjo-Iweala’s efforts in promoting women’s roles in major institutions and commissions.
They stressed the importance of the meeting, coinciding with International Women’s Day, in supporting women’s advancement and achieving greater representation and inclusion globally.
The meeting reflects the WTO’s engagement with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) focused on small and medium-sized enterprises, investment, and entrepreneurship.
