Hopes pinned on Kuching being hailed ‘most energy-saving area’ again in Earth Hour 2024

KUCHING: The Earth Hour 2024 programme this March 23 comes with the goal of getting Kuching recognised, once again, as the most energysaving area in Sarawak.

In making this call, Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said Kuching was named the most energy-saving area during last year’s Earth Hour by Sarawak Energy Bhd’s operational and retail arm, Syarikat Sesco Bhd (Sesco).

“Sesco did some calculations on the energy consumption according to areas during the Earth Hour last year, and Kuching recorded the most energy-saving figures.

“Between 8.30pm and 9.30pm this March 23, let’s reduce our energy consumption and make Kuching once again the most energy-saving area under the calculation done by Sesco to heighten awareness of environmental conservation and save our planet,” he said during his Facebook Live show ‘Shall WEE Talk’ yesterday.

Wee said to further create environment-conservation awareness, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) would carry out a ‘Car Free Day’ at Saradise here to encourage people to reduce carbon emissions.

He said MBKS would want to spread out this ‘Car Free Day’ campaign to other places under its jurisdictions towards raising environmental awareness among the locals.

“We don’t want to limit it (Car Free Day) to our MBKS Complex. We want to create awareness of the need to reduce carbon emission and this is why we run ‘Car Free Day’ at various locations,” he added.

On a separate matter, Wee said no rabies positive case was recorded in the city this week.

However, he said three dog bite cases were reported, of which two occurred at Taman Vision, Batu Kawa and Jalan Kimura, Mile 10 of Jalan Penrissen.

“These three dog bite cases are all suspected cases, but we hope everyone would continue to stay vigilant. Bring your pets for vaccination if your dogs or cats have not been vaccinated against rabies,” he added.
