SARIKEI: Members of the longhouse community must continue to maintain and foster good relations and respect for one another, said Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom.

The Pakan assemblyman, who is also an advisor in the Sarawak Premier’s Office, said this matter was an important element in maintaining harmony and unity for the longhouse community.

“We want to see the longhouse community continue to unite because this step is very important in taking care of and simplifying the duties of the community leaders and village chiefs (KMKK) in managing the governance of the community under their care.

“If we are always united and agree on all matters, especially those that lead to development in a longhouse, we are confident that development will also be easily channelled and related matters will run smoothly.

“Any disagreements or entanglements that arise must be resolved as best as possible for the common good in the future,” he said at the ‘Ngentak Tiang’ ceremony for Rumah Sujang in Sungai Setubu, Pakan on Sunday.

Mawan added that issues or matters that could lead to or cause a division in the longhouse community must be avoided.

“Don’t be easily influenced by issues that can cause division and if there is a problem, discuss it as best you can.

“The public must remember that with unity and agreement, all development plans will go smoothly and everyone will benefit.

“As for the KMKK, they should always take care of the people under their care and ensure that their needs are well taken care of,” he said.

During the event, he presented a minor rural project grant worth RM15,000 to the Rumah Sujang village, security and development committee.
