Kapit MRC chairman lauds members’ high spirit of volunteerism

-

KAPIT: The Kapit Chapter of the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) recently held its triennial general meeting (TGM) at its headquarters here, where the chairman Dr Sia Tih Kong expressed appreciation to all members, especially those in the committee, for their active cooperation and high spirit of volunteerism in various activities organised by the chapter.

However, he noted that there had been a lukewarm response from the youths or working people in joining voluntary organisations like the MRC.

“Year in and year out, it is always the same familiar faces that are seen during annual meetings. The spirit of volunteerism is slowly diminishing.

“Having said this, I thank all of you for the co-operation and support towards the Red Crescent movement,” he told those attending the meeting.

According to him, the aim of the MRC movement is to render assistance to those in need of

help during emergencies or facing difficult situations.

“The risks here are flash flood, fire outbreak, soil erosion, prolonged drought and other natural disasters,” added Dr Sia, while reminding everyone

of the hot weather and high temperature expected in the coming months.

He also informed all that the TGM was supposed to hold an election for the new committee for the 2024-2026 term, but this had to be postponed until April, pending the directives from MRC headquarters due to a change in election format.

In his report, Kapit MRC secretary David Chuo said 2023 was a busy year, packed with activities, and the chapter held six committee meetings.

“Among the main activities were World Red Crescent Day celebration; the 75th anniversary celebration of MRC in Malaysia; mass blood donation drive at Kapit Town Square in conjunction with World Blood Donation Day; flood simulation disaster relief exercise at Rumah Sebuang, Merama in Baleh; first aid training for school teachers; first aid training for employees under the Baleh Dam contractor, staff members of Sarawak Energy Berhad; retreat to Kota Kinabalu; a workshop on good governance leadership; as well as distribution of welfare assistance to four members and food assistance to fire victims of Rumah Sebom, Ulu Sungai Katibas in Song,” he elaborated.
