‘Close proximity to Nusantara poses great prospects for Kapit’
KAPIT: Kapit town has the potential to become a major centre for business in view that it is the nearest town in Sarawak to Indonesia’s new capital Nusantara, says Julau MP Datuk Larry Sng.
According to him, with Nusantara being only some 450km away, the local business community needs ‘to look beyond the horizon’ to tap potential opportunities.
“I believe eventually there will be a road connecting Kapit to Tapak Megah near the Indonesian border, and thereon to Nusantara.
“This would mean that more Indonesians will be coming to Kapit in the future, but only if we have what it takes to attract them. In this regard, the private sector should look into investing in tourism products, and setting up higher learning institutes or even medical facilities here,” he said in his speech for the installation ceremony for Kapit Hawkers Association’s new office-bearers here Saturday.
Adding on, Sng many Indonesians had been seeking medical treatment at private facilities in Kuching because of the higher level of service provided.
“If we can set up such medical facilities here and offer topquality medical care, I believe we can attract Indonesians to come to Kapit for treatment.”
The installation ceremony also had Sng present incentives to high-achieving children of association members, as well as ‘angpows’ (cash packets) to senior citizen members aged 70 and above.
In thanking Kapit Hawkers Association for inviting him to the event, Sng – a former Pelagus assemblyman – said although his is now Julau MP, Kapit remains close to his heart as it is his hometown.
Also present were political secretaries to the Sarawak Premier, Sam Laya and Brian Fung, who presented a contribution of RM10,000 from Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) to the association.
The contribution was received by the association’s treasurer Teng Hou Sing in the presence of chairman Kong Siau Kui and vice chairman Wong Hwang Hyang.
