Hope Place supplies adult diapers to ailing stroke survivor

-

KUCHING: Hope Place Kuching is supplying adult diapers to an ailing senior citizen who suffered a stroke last year.

Amat Malik Chonong, 62, lives with his two children and five grandchildren in Kampung Haji Baki, and is suffering from multiple health problems, said the non-governmental organisation in a release yesterday.

“Pakcik (Uncle) Amat suffered a stroke last year and is still recovering. Mumbling with a soft low voice, he is unable to walk without assistance.

“Back in 2019, Pakcik Amat had undergone heart surgery at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur and so, though only 62, he looks very much older and weak,” said Hope Place, whose representatives visited the family recently.

Amat told Hope Place that he also has blurred vision, which could be a symptom of diabetes.

During the visit, it was noted that Amat’s legs were discoloured and a bit swollen.

Hope Place said Amat lives with his son, Kamarul, 32, who works as an e-hailing driver, as well as his daughter who works at a coffee shop. Both his children are single parents.

“Although the family struggles financially and his family members are either busy earning money or at school, there is always a family member accompanying pakcik at home,” said Hope Place.

Kamarul needs to juggle between taking care of his ailing father and his children, with his job offering him some flexibility in achieving this.

According to Hope Place, Kamarul’s daily routine consists of sending his and his sister’s children to school; helping his father in everything, which includes preparing meals and bathroom ablutions; while his three-year-old boy tags along with him.

“It is not easy being a single parent. We try to do our best for them. Plus, my sister and I are very worried for our ailing father,” Kamarul told Hope Place.

It is also learnt that Amat had, with the help of the village headman, applied for assistance from the Welfare Department in 2022, but his application is still pending approval.

While Hope Place is providing Amat with adult diapers, it also delivered school supplies and toys for the youngest grandchild.

It extended its appreciation to the concerned public members who brought up Amat’s plight.

To carry on helping more needy individuals and families, Hope Place welcomes all donations and will issue receipts upon request.
